My daughter, who had just celebrated her 18th birthday, was 200 miles from home in her first year of college at Cal Poly at San Luis Obispo, California when she had her first panic attack. My wife and I received a phone call from our daughter’s roommate at 11 PM that our daughter was in the emergency room of the local hospital. Needless to say, we threw some basic stuff together and headed for San Luis Obispo.
When we arrived at 2 AM, we found out that she had been admitted to the hospital. When we talked to our daughter, she described her symptoms as follows: rapid heartbeat, shortness of breath, she blacked out, and when she awaken she was on the floor, had chest and back pain, had tingling in her legs and feet, and could not move her legs. Her roommate and some other students helped her to get to the car so someone could take her to the emergency room. She thought that she was going to die. When we talked to the doctor, he could only tell us that he did not know what was wrong with her and that he needed to do more tests. After 5 days of blood tests, CAT scans, and a spinal TAP, she was discharged with a diagnosis of causes unknown.
After two more episodes with the hospital scene repeated, and a doctor diagnosing her as having seizures that resulted in her driving license being suspended, we withdrew her from college and brought her home. We set her up with a neurologist and a psychologist to assess her condition. After about ten sessions with each, they certified that she could drive, and that she had been attack free for over three months. Her diagnosis was panic attacks triggered by anxiety. Meanwhile, I also researched on the internet and at the local libraries to evaluate what solutions or guides existed for self-help treatments to cure panic and anxiety attacks.
She has not had any anxiety or panic attacks for eighteen months and is in college in Boulder, Colorado. She feels that she has overcome her problems without having to be on a drug therapy prevention approach.
